Few things are certain. But one thing is in the world of high-school rankings: Every year the International Academy in Bloomfield Hills will be one of the top-ranked high schools in Michigan.

The academy, which uses the rigorous and increasingly popular International Baccalaureate curriculum, is ranked No. 9 in the nation and first in Michigan in U.S. News’ annual ranking of the best high schools.

The rest of the list also is full of schools that have adopted either the IB curriculum or have a strong college preparatory curriculum.

Four schools are new to the Michigan Top 10 list. They are the International Academy of Macomb, East Grand Rapids High School, Grosse Pointe South High School and Arbor Preparatory.

Susan Meyer, the IB coordinator for the International Academy of Macomb, said the U.S. News ranking is a proud moment for a school that just opened in 2008.

“We just want to do our best,” Meyer said. “We’re just thrilled with this achievement.”

She said the kids at the school fit many of the characteristics of the typical IB student: they’re open-minded, balanced, risk-takers, thinkers and communicators.

“They exhibit all of those qualities to the nth degree,” Meyer said.

Schools must go through a rigorous authorization process in order to be considered an IB school. The curriculum is based on international standards and is designed to prepare students for entry into colleges worldwide.

The Macomb school, located in Clinton Township, enrolls about 500 students from 19 Macomb County school districts.

Here are the top-ranked schools in Michigan, along with how they ranked nationally:

  1. International Academy, Bloomfield Hills, 9
  2. International Academy of Macomb, 12
  3. City Middle/High School, Grand Rapids, 47
  4. Excel Charter Academy-Grand River Prep School, Grand Rapids charter school, 153
  5. East Grand Rapids High School, 424
  6. Birmingham Seaholm High School, 445
  7. Saline High School, 488
  8. Grosse Pointe South High School, 503
  9. Troy High School, 511
  10. Arbor Preparatory High School, an Ypsilanti charter school, 53

How were the schools chosen? U.S. News, along with the social service research firm RTI, reviewed about 20,0000 high schools to come up with its national rankings and individual state rankings. Top-ranked schools have students performing better than statistically expected on their state exams. Their black, Hispanic and low-income students perform better than similar students statewide. The schools also have high graduation rates. And they have a high rate of participation in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses.

The rankings are based on data from the 2013-14 school year.
